Paul asks…

I have a wordpress blog now, but I can’t figure out how to get readers into there! I have been using myspace and it’s been great, subscriptions like crazy, but a lot of them don’t have wordpress…so no leads there. Besides, I am posting the same info to both, so it’s not much of a point of them getting one. How can I increase my wordpress readership? I already utilize tags, but I still only got about 89 views in two weeks.

Thanks in advance–serious answers only, please!

Herschel Lawhorn answers:

Commenting on other blogs is a great way to get traffic to your blog. Another really good way is to use sites like Stumble Upon. I get 500-800 visitors a day some days just from Stumble Upon.
I am also a member of a social power linking group. We share posts with each other and vote up the ones we like.

Other sites like

I’m looking for a sites like that features videos of interviews and/or lectures by intellectuals, writers, artists, philosophers, scientists, etc as the main component of their content. I’m not necessarily looking only for political content like the Bloggingheads site typically contains – just anything with smart, interesting stuff.

How can I record video chats the way that does? Ideally, I’d end up with a Quicktime file.

I’m looking to record both sides of a video chat discussion I’m having with my friend on our webcams. We’re using Logitech’s software now, but can easily/happily switch to AIM video chat or Skype or Meebo, or really whatever works!

Ideally, one of us will just hit ‘record’ and we’ll end up with a quicktime file of our discussion that I can view later, send to my friends, post to YouTube, etc.

keywords: AIM, video chat, record video, iChat, videoconference, two-way chat, Stickam, Userplane, buddy list, buddies, skype, video phone call, web video,

Herschel Lawhorn answers:

I think both of you would need a screen capturing program like Camtasia, then you would have to crop both videos and edit (intertwine) them into one file.

Camtasia will output to avi, to make a move you would need Quicktime Pro which will convert it to .mov!

I want to start a blog search site. I have the domain but how do I get the search engine?

My only hurdle is that I don’t know how to get a search engine for the actual blog search function. I can’t find any info on it either. I don’t know if Id have to have my own crawler built or if I can just pay someone to plug the search into my site. Can anyone help please? I know I could use Google Custom Search but it doesn’t have the flexibility that I need.

Herschel Lawhorn answers:

Sorry to break the news; but, Google Search already does this–and you can limit it to news and forums too.

How to get WordPress Blog into a separate URL?

I want to have 2 or 3 different wordpress based blogs hosted under one account. I already have several domain names and a host and have already installed WP blogs into separate folders through FTP.

But, what I need to know how to have the domain URL point straight to the blog without having to move files into the root directory. If domain name is, i want it to go straight to the Blog instead of having in the URL.

Herschel Lawhorn answers:

You can have as many WordPress blogs installed under one hosting account as you want as long as they are all installed in separate folders and have separate SQL databases installed for each WordPress blog. It sounds like you have done this correctly.

WordPress should be installed to the root of each of these new folders you created. If you install WordPress to a subfolder like then you have just unnecessarily added another subfolder that you didn’t need to add, unless of course you want to install 2 blogs under the root of one domain. In that scenario you would be using one WordPress installation as a main site and then the other WordPress installation would be a designated blog site under the main site.

On the root of your domain / website you want to create these folders and then install WordPress separately into each folder. This is the best structure and naming convention to avoid name resolution problems and many other problems.

Before I answer the question, as I understand it, I want to point this out. There are a couple of different ways to set up your WordPress blog. The default state of your WordPress blog is to have all your latest posts posted to your blog home page in typical blog fashion ie most current post is posted at the top, next oldest post is below, next post, etc. An alternative WordPress blog setup is to have a your home page be a static page. Which then means you can designate another page as your “official” blog page on your website. The practical use for this setup method is when you want your Home page to have content on it that you want to pretty much stay consistently the same instead of having all your latest posts posted on your home page.

Ok so now the answer:

Click on your Settings Panel in your WordPress Blog.
Click on General.
You will see these 2 setting options:
WordPress address (URL)
Blog address (URL) Enter the address here if you want your blog homepage to be different from the directory you installed WordPress.

This gives you the option to designate a different blog homepage besides the default root of your website and which is going to also be your homepage. If you see as your URLs under your general settings this means that you installed WordPress to the folder and not the root folder, which would not have /blog on the end of the URL. If this is the case I recommend that you move your WordPress blog by following these instructions >>> >>> it is quick and easy to do. Unless of course you intend to have a main WordPress website and then another WordPress website under that main site acting as a separate blog. An example of this scenario can be seen on my website >>> My main WordPress website has another WordPress installation under a subfolder called /aitpro-blog. I wanted to have my main site not look and act like a typical WordPress blog and wanted my blog to look and act completely like a WordPress blog. Both sites look visually identical so to a visitor they cannot tell that they are actually switching between two different WordPress sites – you get the best of all worlds using this method. In contrast you can have a WordPress blog not look like a blog at all and even hide the designated blog posting page like I did here (I used the Exclude pages from Navigation WordPress plugin) >>>

So let’s say you want to set up your Home page as a static page, which in your case you may or may not want or decide to do. You would then create a new blog page or designate an existing page on your website to be the designated “official” blog page instead of the home page.

To setup up a static home page (Front Page) and a designated Blog page (Posts Page)
Click on your Settings panel.
Click on Reading.
You will see these options.
Front page displays either your latest posts option or a static page.
Then you just choose whatever page you want as your Front page and whatever page you want as your Posts page.

Hopefully I answered your question and maybe gave you some more ideas and options to think about. One thing I would like to impress on you is that it is better to set things up optimally right from the very beginning, otherwise you could end up costing yourself a lot of time if you end up having to redesign your WordPress blog later on. Good luck!

There are heaps of form handling plugins available for WordPress and many of these make it very simple to add Captcha Capabilities. My own personal favourite is “Contact Form 7” which does have a Captcha capability and plenty of other features.

Why is TNA assumed to be “inferior” by many people?

Slammiversary was the best PPV for a long time by both WWE and TNA yet people are calling it terrible. Is this a typical case of shotsighted WWE fan boys, has Michael Cole been blogging again?

Herschel Lawhorn answers:

People call TNA inferior because it is inferior to WWE right now as far as popularity goes, I mean WWE gets like 3million viewers and TNA gets roughly 1million viewers. Now I am a fan of both companies and personally I enjoy TNA more than WWE these days because TNA is TV-14 and not PG so I can see blood, swearing and some hardcore wrestling.

As far as Slammiversary goes, it was good even some of the matches that I thought would be lame were actually pretty good like Kendrick vs Doug Williams and Jay Lethal vs AJ. However I wouldn’t go as far to say that it was the best ppv in a long time by TNA or WWE, I personally think Wrestlemania 26 was better than Slammiversary, but not by far.
